Small-Sided Games (SSGs) are football sessions played with fewer players on smaller pitches. They are designed to increase touches on the ball, enhance quick decision-making, and ensure more involvement per player compared to a full 11-a-side match. SSG formats typically range from 3v3 to 7v7, with 9v9 and 11v11 being larger, full-pitch formats.

At Whitefield FC & Academy, we follow a structured approach to SSGs — 5v5 for U7s & U9s, 7v7 for U11s, and 9v9 to 11v11 for U13s and above. This system aligns perfectly with age-specific player development goals.

How SSGs Help in Player Development

More Touches

With fewer players and a smaller pitch, every child gets more touches on the ball. This repetition helps improve their technical skills — from dribbling and passing to shooting. More touches mean faster improvement and confidence with the ball.
